Update on CNG Certification: Pioneering Change in Hydroponics & Vertical Farming

Becoming a trailblazer in the hydroponics and vertical farming space wasn’t exactly on my 2025 bingo card—but here we are! It seems my certification application has sparked some meaningful conversations, and I’m excited to see where this leads.

CNG aligns with USDA organic standards while maintaining the flexibility to adapt as the industry evolves. Through this process, two key insights have emerged:

Hydroponics & Synthetic Nutrients – CNG has historically hesitated to certify hydroponic operations due to their use of synthetic nutrients, particularly in mature crop production (like lettuce and leafy greens).

Bioplastics in Growing Operations – Until now, CNG hasn’t formally addressed bioplastics in their "naturally grown" criteria. For context, bioplastics are derived from renewable sources (such as corn, sugarcane, or cellulose) and can be biodegradable, compostable, or even durable—offering a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics.

We currently use BioStrate, a 100% plant-based bioplastic grow medium—something CNG hasn’t encountered before. In response, they’re launching an internal study and polling their members to shape future standards around bioplastics.

In the meantime, to maintain my CNG certification, We’ve decided to transition my operation to hemp-based growing media. While slightly more expensive, hemp is an incredible renewable resource—and I’m thrilled to support the hemp industry while staying true to sustainable practices.

Change doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s exciting to be part of the conversation pushing this movement forward. Here’s to innovation, adaptability, and growing a greener future—one step at a time!
